RHDR coach dimensions

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could help me with dimensions for Romney Hythe and Dymchurch coaches as I'm trying to model something along the same lines and am a bit worried that I might have the height and width wrong.

Also, does anyone know if there are drawings/dimensions around for Captain Howeys amazing rolls royce Loco - it was brought to my attention by the wonderful people on this forum (shameful 'buttering up' ) and I'm seriously considering as the next project once my current loco and coaches are finished!

Hi Ian,

Thats the one that I was pointed to before, thanks for reminding me, I vaguely remember that the 36mm scale model is 22 inches long which rescaled for my prefered 16mm scale I think works out at about 9 inches long! hmm that might look a little Gnuts, not sure i've worked that ut right

I am the bearer of both good and bad news I am afraid.
The good ___ Alphagraphix card kit people do (or did) a 7mm scale card kit of two of the coaches together with a loco. I know that they did because I bought one such kit many years ago. It was one of their smaller kits and didn't cost very much even out here
The bad ____ It is safely stored in the 'card kits' folder and I absolutely NO idea where that is (not where I expected it to be when I went looking)

If I do manage to find it in the next day or so I will send you the basic dimensions but please don't hold your breath.

from other refeences to Alphagraphix kits for other railways, it suggests Alphagraphix are still producing kits for other preserved railways so maybe contacting RHDR might provide something

Yes that's the kit.
Pity the second photo didn't have a ruler in the image, Rob could have got the information that he needed straight from that.
(Although knowing that the sheet is A5 maybe all is not lost)

Big thanks to all so far! I agree I may be able to roughly work out the width/height of the coaches by scaling up those photos, so thats great.

I have a vague recollection of seeing a card model floating around here or on google for Captain Howey's Rolls Royce loco. I came across it completely by chance about a week ago and now can't remember how .Only thing I know is that I've been beating myself up ever since that I didn't keep the link!

From The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway by WJK Davies the coaches were various sizes. Typical sizes were:

Queen Anne 12 seaters LxWxH 16' x 3'5" x 5'2"

1970s standard 20 seater coaches 24' x 3'6" x 5'3"


There are lots of measurements in the book. If you have specific coaches in mind post what they are and I can check.

What drawings are included within the book?

The history on the RH&DR. It really does not provide the sort of pictures/drawings modellers need.

Only a few side drawing of locomotives. There are no rollingstock drawings.

Do they have enough dimensions to draw up a coach in AutoCAD?
There are only basic L x W x H measurements for most but not all of the rollingstock.

this is a similar problem to hat I faced 30 years ago when I started messing round in what is now known as O9. Even visited Ravenglass hoping they might have some proper drawings.
I can understand it with bigger railways, but not something with close connections with model engineering.
Sometimes think there is some type of protectionism to stop someone else building similar locos and rolling stock. Maybe its time for someone to produce some proper drawings, I think there is enough interest now and apart from time taken, costs are probably relatively lower these days.
It was one reason I drifted away from O9 until I found the Gnatterbox a few years later.

So we´ll see Gn15 passenger cars with 20 persons seated in the near future?

I think, so far, the largest GN15 passenger transporter in here were Christoph DCR models.

Probably not! I'm working on 16mm scale, 12 1/4 inch gauge, I was after the height and width dimensions to make sure that my coaches wouldn't look to bizarre and unfeasible. Length wise I have gone for ten seaters to give enough leg room for the passengers whilst retaining something close to the original length of the donor chassis.

Hopefully I'll have some pictures up soon, but having 'issues' with internet connection at home so could be a while.

Get 10 sitting 16mm scale figures and try to build a coach around them.

In 1 : 22,5, my 8 passengers on 4 benches need a wagon about 160mm long.



16mm / 1 : 19th scale is remarkebly larger, so I´d estimate a coach length of approx 240 mm for a wagon with 5 benches.
