STUFF one finds.......

Happy Monday!
While I was searching for some old cars, built some time ago, I came across a batch of stuff I built 10 years ago.
To be exact, some locos in 1:22.5 scale running on 32 MM track.
The locos where built/ hammered together....very poorly. I had used them as background models on our club laypout.
That said, the BUG got me. Since I can not finish my layout for space reasons, I decided that at least I could start building something again.
to start, I took everything apart. They where so bad that I did not take any before pictures. I ended up with 4 drives from
ATLAS / LILLIPUT. 2 of them are 2 wheel drives , 2 are 3 wheelers.
here is the batch:



The first thing I did is clean everything up and see what I wanted to use for the project.
well, here are my possibilities:
A 2 Axle center cab with long hoods on both sides:



A 2 Axle sort of center cab with one long and one very short hood:



A short 2 axle with conventional hood and cab:



And a 3 Axle conventional with a long hood and relatively large cab. This one I will definitely build:



In general I am leaning very much to the long hood center cab, don't ask me why, it just appeals to me.
Everything you see is just loosely placed on the drives.
An other thought I had, in case I ever wanted to run them, was to install an RC unit. Based on my extremely bad experience with track building and thus bad electrical supply, this seem a good idea. plus there is a large amount of space available.

Yes, DO proceed, and yes, DO use RC for them. It makes track work SO easy. The things can run on bare floor if you wish.

I support the RC idea 100%. I am building a L shaped shelf layout 15x15 in Gn15 (1/24th scale). I have built four critters for it that are RC using Del Tang equipment. Best decision ever. I have 13 stub turnouts and 2 turntables - all manually operated. Operating with RC and manual controls is great. Go for it!

+1 for the Deltang R/c stuff. All 3 of my locos are done that way. Only wiring I have is for the remote turnouts, and those are just hooked up to an old power pack. Easy peasy.

What is cost of a basic setup for one loco? just curious...

Go to On30guy.com for U.S. prices etc. Basically startup cost for one engine is - Throttle kit $32 to $38, Receiver $42, Battery $7-10, Charger $25 up. Kit building and installation of stuff is easy for anyone with soldering skills.

grrr... I just lost a long post, so short version...

Send an email to David at Deltang and ask for advice. He is very helpful. I bought all my stuff directly from him and it was a very smooth transaction, no problem with shipping. He even made some mods for me to save me a bit of work, stuff like long leads on receiver, etc.

Really appreciate all the info. I definitely will go the RC route, it seems to be the only sensible approach.
Once I have the first one done I'll star with the RC. I realize that the components are quite small which would also
leave enough room for a sound unit.
Is there something like this available and more importantly are they easy to install?
Just trying to get as much info as possible.
On the model building side. Making some progress and am trying to find a none intrusive way to attach the cab so it
can be removed for maintenance and installation of the electronics.
Also looking at the interior of the cab. Looks like I have to get a bit creative to hide the Lead weights.

Hi,
sometimes the lack of attention to detail comes back and bites you , even 10 years later.......
Meaning, I have to do some more work on matching the Loco cab and Hood an figure out a way to attach it to the chassis.
Since I am on a ROLL..... I started on the cars I want to use.
Well I have a set of the BACHMAN Koppel Side Dump cars.


Since my cars are to be of German prototype the need to be converted to single side dumping, which is really easy.
Which you can see on the later pictures. Also some serous aging was necessary.
Here is the first step of the dump body:


And last but not least, it needed to be re-gauged from 45 MM to 32 MM.Once you figure out how to open up the frame, not a problem.
Just saw a few MM off the spacer and put the axle back together.
But a word of caution, the frame is pinned together and the frame is cast/injection molded metal.

Got a bit further down the road.
Added a break stand to the car.Since it is to be a 3 car train, I thought one with a break stand would be appropriate.
Found some Pictures of DOLBERG and KOPPEL prototypes and loosely based it on them. and while I was ad it
converted a Faller Bumper.

Now a bit of "aging " and the finishing touch to the dump body...........

Hey, that's getting somewhere. The center cab will fly. For visual interest, and to see what viewers might say, the off-center-cab-but-not-quite-end-cab one with very short hood has potential; and it does bring to mind some real locomotives here and there around the planet.

Thanks for the picture links, very interesting. Always great to see something real that just floated around in the imagination.
As to the guy sleeping... well I replaced him with one awake and wearing the appropriate hard hat.
Now back to the car.I is almost complete, all that is missing are some details and the support with the magnet needs to be fixed.
You can see it in the picture.





Here you can see the post with the magnet and the metal plate on the dump body. Unfortunately the magnet I used is not strong enough.
Since I would like the dump function to work remotely at one time , the retainer chains can not be used to keep the dump body in place.





Now off to the next car and a bit more work on the loco.

Wow, that little car looks like something you would find in a museum. Great job!

The picture of the Davenport is a classic. Look at the dents and abuse that little guy has withstood.

Well, forgot the Hard Hat Guy, here he is.
Just to mention it. The figure is 1:22.5 scale, the Bachman car is a 1:20.3 which makes it one of the largest side dumps used in 1:22.5 scale. Approximately a 4CY dump body/3.7 CY Meters.

Hi and happy weekend,
well here is something else i found in the "magic box".
I bought this in 2004 and completely forgot about it.





I remember paying around $50.- for it. Not bad for a fully functioning and super detailed clam bucket.
It may be the start of an interesting excavator model......who knows.

But back to the dump cars.
I will be starting on the other 2 without the brake stand.If you guys are interested I will document the process and back it up with pictures.
